With a first degree in history and science from Harvard University and a master’s from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA, MIRAI CHATTERJEE could have pursued a lucrative career abroad. But inspired by her parents’ Nehruvian ideals and her meeting with Ela Bhatt, she returned to India to work for the Self Employed Women’s Association of India (SEWA). Since then, for the past thirty years, Mirai has been at the forefront of improving the health and financial security of women in India’s informal sector, and highlighting the importance of gender equity, education and sanitation. She says, ‘The daily inspiration from the women I work with—who have so little materially, but are full of courage and good cheer—keeps me going.’

For her commendable work as the director of SEWA Social Security, Mirai has been presented the Global Achievement Award by Johns Hopkins University. When she’s not at work, Mirai loves reading, gardening and unwinding with her friends, her three daughters and her ‘jeevan sathi’, her husband.
